'sang kusing . . . 'sang linggo

 

Sapagka't sinasabi ko sa inyo, na kung hindi hihigit ang inyong katuwiran sa katuwiran ng mga eskriba at mga Fariseo, sa anomang paraan ay hindi kayo magsisipasok sa kaharian ng langit. (Mateo 5:20) Ngunit hanapin muna ninyo ang paghahari ng Diyos at ang kaniyang katuwiran, at ang lahat ng mga bagay na ito ay idaragdag sa inyo. (Mateo 6:33)

 

Ang katuwiran ng mga eskriba at mga Fariseo . . . Ang paghahari ng Diyos at ang kaniyang katuwiran

 

May ilang mga nagtiwala sa kanilang mga sarili na sila ay matuwid at hinamak nila ang iba. Sa kanila ay sinabi rin ni Jesus ang talinghagang ito. Dalawang lalaki ang umahon sa templo upang manalangin. Ang isa ay Fariseo at ang isa ay maniningil ng buwis. Tumayo ang Fariseo at nanalangin siya sa kaniyang sarili ng ganito: Diyos, pinasasalamatan kita na hindi ako katulad ng ibang tao. Hindi ako katulad nila na mga mangingikil, mga hindi matuwid at mga mangangalunya. Hindi rin ako katulad ng maniningil ng buwis na ito. Dalawang ulit akong nag-aayuno sa loob ng isang linggo. Nagbibigay ako ng ikapu sa lahat ng bagay na aking tinatangkilik.

 

Ngunit ang maniningil ng buwis na nakatayo sa malayo ay hindi man lamang niya itinataas ang kaniyang paningin sa langit, sa halip ay kaniyang binabayo ang kaniyang dibdib. Sinabi niya: Diyos, pagkalooban mo ako ng iyong habag, ako na isang makasalanan.

 

Sinasabi ko sa inyo: Ang taong ito ay umuwi sa kaniyang bahay na pinaging-matuwid at ang isa ay hindi. Ito ay sapagkat ang bawat isang nagtataas ng kaniyang sarili ay ibababa, at ang bawat isang nagpapakumbaba ay itataas.

Ang Pagtulong sa Nangangailangan . . . Mag-ingat kayo na huwag gawing pakitang-tao lamang ang inyong pamamahagi sa mga kahabag-habag. Kung magkagayon ay hindi kayo tatanggap ng gantimpala sa inyong Ama sa langit.

 

Kaya nga, kapag ikaw ay namamahagi sa mga kahabag-habag, huwag mong hipan ang trumpeta na nasa harap mo, gaya ng ginagawa ng mga mapagpaimbabaw sa mga sinagoga at sa mga daan. Ginagawa nila ito upang sila ay luwalhatiin ng mga tao. Katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo: Tinanggap na nila ang kanilang gantimpala. Kung mamahagi ka sa mga kahabag-habag, huwag mo nang ipaalam sa iyong kaliwang kamay kung ano ang ginagawa ng iyong kanang kamay. Sa gayon, maililihim ang iyong pamamahagi sa mga kahabag-habag. Ang iyong Ama na nakakakita sa lihim ay magbibigay ng gantimpala sa iyo nang hayagan. (Mateo 6:1-4)

 

. . . sa Pananalangin - Kapag ikaw ay mananalangin, huwag mong tularan ang mga mapagpaimbabaw. Ito ay sapagkat gustong-gusto nilang manalangin habang nakatayo sa mga sinagoga at sa mga panulukang-daan upang makita sila ng mga tao. Katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo: Tinanggap na nila ang kanilang gantimpala. 6 Ngunit kung ikaw ay mananalangin, pumasok ka sa iyong silid. Kapag naisara mo na ang pinto, manalangin ka sa iyong Ama na nasa lihim. Ang iyong Ama na nakakakita sa lihim ang magbibigay sa iyo ng gantimpala nang hayagan. 7 Ngunit kapag ikaw ay mananalangin, huwag mong gamitin ang mga walang kabuluhang paulit-ulit na mga panalangin gaya ng ginagawa ng mga Gentil. Ito ay sapagkat nananalangin sila nang paulit-ulit dahil sa kanilang palagay ay diringgin sila sa dami ng kanilang salita. 8 Huwag ninyo silang tularan sapagkat alam na ng inyong Ama ang mga bagay na inyong kinakailangan bago pa man kayo humingi sa kaniya.

. . . sa Pag-aayuno - Kapag kayo ay mag-aayuno, huwag ninyong tularan ang mga mapagpaimbabaw na pinapalungkot ang kanilang mukha. Ito ay sapagkat pinasasama nila ang anyo ng kanilang mga mukha upang makita ng mga tao na sila ay nag-aayuno. Katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo: Tinanggap na nila ang kanilang gantimpala. Ngunit kung mag-aayuno ka, langisan mo ang iyong ulo at maghilamos ka ng iyong mukha. Sa ganoon, hindi makikita ng mga tao na nag-aayuno ka kundi ng iyong Ama na nasa lihim. Ang iyong Ama na nakakakita sa lihim ang magbibigay sa iyo ng gantimpala nang hayagan. (Mateo 6: 16-18)

 

. . . Ang Kayamanan sa Langit - Huwag kayong mag-ipon para sa inyong sarili ng kayamanan dito sa lupa na kung saan maraming tanga at kalawang ang naninira. Nanakawin din ang mga ito ng mga magnanakaw. Sa halip, mag-ipon kayo ng kayamanan sa langit dahil doon ay walang tanga at kalawang na sisira, at wala ring mga magnanakaw. Ito ay sapagkat kung saan naroroon ang inyong kayamanan ay naroroon din naman ang inyong puso.

Huwag Mabalisa - Dahil dito, sinasabi ko sa inyo: Huwag kayong mabalisa sa inyong buhay kung ano ang inyong kakainin, o iinumin, o kung ano ang inyong daramtin. Hindi ba ang buhay ay higit pa sa pagkain at ang katawan ay higit pa sa damit? Tingnan ninyo ang mga ibon sa himpapawid. Hindi sila naghahasik, ni gumagapas, ni nag-iipon sa mga bangan, ngunit pinakakain sila ng inyong Ama na nasa langit. Hindi ba lalo kayong higit na mahalaga kaysa sa kanila? Sino sa inyo na sa pagkabalisa ay makapagdaragdag ng isang siko sa kaniyang tangkad?

 

Bakit kayo nababalisa patungkol sa damit? Masdan ninyo ang mga liryo sa parang kung paano sila lumalaki. Hindi sila gumagawa, ni humahabi man. Ngunit sinasabi ko sa inyo: Kahit si Solomon, sa lahat ng kaniyang kaluwalhatian, ay hindi nakapaggayak katulad ng isa sa mga ito. Dinaramtan ng Diyos ang damo sa parang, na ngayon ay buhay at bukas ay susunugin. Kung dinaramtan niya ang damo sa ganoong paraan, hindi ba niya kayo daramtan, kayong maliliit ang pananampalataya? Kaya nga, huwag kayong mabalisa at inyong sasabihin: Ano ang aming kakainin, ano ang aming iinumin at ano ang aming daramtin? Ang mga bagay na ito ay mahigpit na hinahangad ng mga Gentil. Alam ng inyong Ama na nasa langit na kinakailangan ninyo ang lahat ng mga bagay na ito. Ngunit hanapin muna ninyo ang paghahari ng Diyos at ang kaniyang katuwiran, at ang lahat ng mga bagay na ito ay idaragdag sa inyo. Huwag nga kayong mabalisa patungkol sa kinabukasan sapagkat ang kinabukasan ang mababalisa sa kaniyang sarili. Sapat na sa bawat araw ang kasamaan nito.

Ang pagsunod sa kautusan ang batayan ng katuwiran ng mga Fariseo at mga Escriba . . . Ang pagpapasakop sa paghahari ng Diyos ang batayan ng katuwiran na ipinapayo ng Panginoon Jesus sa Kaniyang mga alagad. Sa kanyang Sermon sa Bundok (Mateo 5-7) malinaw Niyang ipinaliwanag ang kaibhan ng dalawa : ang pagiging maka-kautusan ng una at pagiging maka-Diyos ng huli.

 

Isang malaking transformasyon kundi man himalang maituturing kapag ang dalawa ay naging magkasinkahulugan - dumating na ang Kanyang kaharian at nasunod na ang Kanyang kalooban kung paano sa langit ay gayon din naman dito sa lupa . Para sa mga Mananampalatayang Tinaguriang mga Metodista, nangangahulugan din ito nang katuparan ng itinuring nilang natatanging pagkakatiwala - Kaganapang Kristiano (Christian Perfection) !

 

Ang usapin ng pangangasiwa ng salapi ang pinakamalaking alalahanin sa katuparan ng pagkakatiwalang Metodista o Kaganapan Kristiano at naglatag si John Wesley ng Tatlong Alituntunin hinggil dito -

 

Let the world be as corrupt as it will, is gold or silver to blame? "The love of money," we know, "is the root of all evil;" but not the thing itself. The fault does not lie in the money, but in them that use it. It may be used ill: and what may not? But it may likewise be used well: It is full as applicable to the best, as to the worst uses. It is of unspeakable service to all civilized nations, in all the common affairs of life: It is a most compendious instrument of transacting all manner of business, and (if we use it according to Christian wisdom) of doing all manner of good. It is true, were man in a state of innocence, or were all men "filled with the Holy Ghost," so that, like the infant Church at Jerusalem, "no man counted anything he had his own," but "distribution was made to everyone as he had need," the use of it would be superseded; as we cannot conceive there is anything of the kind among the inhabitants of heaven. But, in the present state of mankind, it is an excellent gift of God, answering the noblest ends. In the hands of his children, it is food for the hungry, drink for the thirsty, raiment for the naked: It gives to the traveller and the stranger where to lay his head. By it we may supply the place of an husband to the widow, and of a father to the fatherless. We maybe a defence for the oppressed, a means of health to the sick, of ease to them that are in pain; it may be as eyes to the blind, as feet to the lame; yea, a lifter up from the gates of death!

 

It is therefore of the highest concern that all who fear God know how to employ this valuable talent; that they be instructed how it may answer these glorious ends, and in the highest degree. And, perhaps, all the instructions which are necessary for this may be reduced to three plain rules . . .

 

Gain all you can, Save all you can, Give all you can!

 

We ought to gain all we can gain . . . But this it is certain we ought not to do; we ought not to gain money at the expense of life, nor (which is in effect the same thing) at the expense of our health . . .

 

Having gained all you can, by honest wisdom and unwearied diligence, the second rule of Christian prudence is," Save all you can." Do not throw the precious talent into the sea: Do not throw it away in idle expenses, which is just the same as throwing it into the sea. Expend no part of it merely to gratify the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eye, or the pride of life . . .

 

Add the Third rule to the two preceding. Having, First, gained all you can, and, Secondly saved all you can, Then "give all you can." In order to see the ground and reason of this, consider, when the Possessor of heaven and earth brought you into being, and placed you in this world, he placed you here not as a proprietor, but a steward: As such he entrusted you, for a season, with goods of various kinds; but the sole property of these still rests in him, nor can be alienated from him. As you yourself are not your own, but his, such is, likewise, all that you enjoy. Such is your soul and your body, not your own, but God's. And so is your substance in particular. And he has told you, in the most clear and express terms, how you are to employ it for him, in such a manner, that it may be all an holy sacrifice, acceptable through Christ Jesus. And this light, easy service, he has promised to reward with an eternal weight of glory.

Ang mga alituntunin na pinanukala ni John Wesley para sa mga mananampalatayang tinaguriang mga Metodista ay matapat din niyang isinabuhay bilang sariling alituntunin -

 

Wesley's interest in the relief of the poor began while he was at college in Oxford. One of the rigidly observed, if not required, rules of the Holy Club was that its members should give away in relief of the poor all they had left after providing for their own necessities. Wesley in later years wrote : "One of them had thirty pounds a year. He lived on twenty- eight, and gave away forty shillings. The next year, receiving sixty pounds, he still lived on twenty-eight and gave away thirty-two. The third year he received ninety pounds and gave away sixty-two. The fourth year he received one hundred and twenty pounds; still he lived as before, on twenty-eight, and gave to the poor all the rest." This **one" was John Wesley; and the rule here laid down he observed to the end of his life, never spending upon himself more than twenty-eight pounds a year . . .

 

Shortly before his death he closed his cashbook with the following words, "For upward of eighty-six years I have kept my accounts exactly ; I will not attempt it any longer, being satisfied with the continual conviction that I save all I can and give all I can ; that is, all I have." Wesley's personal charities were only a part of his service for the poor . . . The demand grew for relief work in London, and Wesley was obliged to adopt new plans. He writes, May 7, 1741 : " I reminded the United Society that many of our brethren and sisters had not needful food; many were destitute of convenient clothing; many were out of business, and that without their own fault ; and many sick and ready to perish ; that I had done what in me lay to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to employ the poor, and to visit the sick ; but was not, alone, sufficient for these things, and therefore desired all whose hearts were as my heart : 1. To bring what clothes each could spare, to be distributed among those that wanted most. 2. To give weekly a penny, or what they could afford for the relief of the poor and sick.

1. Gabay sa pagsapi at pakikisangkot sa ating Kooperatiba - Kabisig Community MPC -

 

“In 1844, twenty-eight working people founded the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society… From the mutual efforts of those humble workers grew an idea that today serves the needs of over 720 million members world-wide. The year 1844 represents the birth of the modern co-operative movement… Rochdale, although historically a small town, holds an important role in the development of the Industrial Age in Britain… John Wesley visited the town in 1749 and spoke at the Wesleyan Chapel on Toad Lane. To the seekers of heavenly salvation Wesley urged such earthly practices as “buying one of another-helping each other in business,” and to “gain all they can, and to save all they can.” The Methodists and the Rochdale Pioneers later mastered both practices. 2. Gabay sa paghahanapbuhay at produktibong pagsisinop ng kita para makatulong sa ibang nangangailangan -

 

John and Charles Wesley's concern for the poor is well-known . . . Sixty-five percent of Methodist class members worked in jobs (when they had jobs) where the pay was below the poverty line. Nevertheless, they brought their penny a week to assist those who were in even more desperate straits than themselves. The poor ministered to the poor, mutually sharing in the 'works of mercy,' which the Wesleys were convinced were means of grace. They knew that an encounter with the love of God is inseparable from the care of others.

3. Gabay sa pag-i-impok at pangangasiwa ng salapi para makatulong sa mga kasamang nangangailang sa komunidad ng pananampalataya -

 

It was one of those "social action" Methodist churches. First, it was a school for poor children, operated eleven hours daily. The church was a site of a "house of mercy" where board and room were given for destitute widows, unwanted orphans, and blind people. A dispensary also operated out of the church, offering free services of a pharmacist and a surgeon to some 100 needy people every month. Another phase of the church social program was a savings bank. Church members could deposit their money, knowing it would be used to help poverty-stricken families facing financial crisis. It was a kind of credit union.  In the church was a thriving book store. This socially conscious Methodist church was also a place of worship. Hundreds of people came on Sunday and during the week to hear the Gospel  preached, to sing God's praises, to pray, to study the Bible, and to fellowship with other Christians. Last but not least, the church provided living quarters for a traveling preacher named John Wesley. Between itinerant preaching missions he lives in the church as did his aging mother. It was the world's first Methodist church, established by John Wesley himself.”

Kung may bahay na itinatag ng fritong manok (the house that fried chicken built) . . . may bahay pananampalatayang pinatatag ng 'sang kusing-sang linggong overflowing offering plate!

Sinupin natin ang mga alituntuning pinanukala ni John Wesley para sa mga mananampalatayang tinaguriang mga Metodista at sikaping isabuhay bilang disiplinang gabay sa pagka-alagad.
